Tokyo Olympics: A Dream Short-lived for FUTO Undergraduate Lizzy Anyanacho.

In the early hours of today One of Nigeria’s Olympic medal Hopeful 22 year old Lizzy Anyanacho stepped on the turf to combat with Nur Tatar Askari  a world and European champion Turkish female Taekwondo practitioner at the Round 16 women’s 67kg Taekwondo fight.

Nur Tatar 6 years older than Lizzy is a serial Olympian who won Olympic Silver in London 2012 and a Bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro 2016. In a fight that lasted for 6 minutes Lizzy the statistics student of Federal University of Technology Owerri lost to Nur Tatar Askari by 7-12 in a 3 round fight.

Young Lizzy making her first appearance at the Olympics in Tokyo defeated Rio 2016 Olympian and 2015 African Games champion Urgence Mouega of Gabon to secure a Tokyo 2020 place at the qualifying event in Morocco. Lizzy Anyanacho won her first competition in the World Tae-Kwondo Open Championship in Ghana in 2017, and also secured bronze at the 2019 African Games.

Taekwondo as a sport originated in korea and debuted at the Olympics at Sidney 2000 in Australia and Lizzy  made history as the second female  representing   Nigeria in Taekwondo at the Olympics after 16 years of absence in the female category of the sport.

Lizzy began Taekwondo at age 15 in Lugbe, Nigeria. She was introduced to the sport by her coach Chika Chukwumerije who also won a bronze medal representing Nigeria in Taekwondo at the Olympics.  This is Lizzy’s first Olympic which she defeated an Olympian and African champion in the sport to represent Nigeria. She remains a hot prospect in Taekwondo as the world has taken cognizance of her emergence and we are sure of a  glorious future for her in the sport at the global stage having already conquered Africa at 22years of age.
